A child loses heat faster than you, generates less of it, and will not mention any of this until the moment it becomes a crisis in a lift line.

Three layers, no more: a thin wool or synthetic base layer, one fleece, and a waterproof jacket and snow pants. Nothing cotton anywhere. Then check them physically rather than asking - a hand on a cheek and asking them to wiggle their fingers - because a child will say they are fine right up until they are not. Below about 15F wind chill, make it a half day.

Why children get cold faster

It is not that children are more delicate. It is arithmetic. A small body has more surface area relative to its mass, so heat escapes faster than a larger body loses it. And a child generates less heat to begin with, especially on a learning slope where a lot of the morning is spent standing in a line waiting for a turn.

The practical translation, from the temperature bands page: shift every adult comfort band up by about ten degrees for a child under eight. A temperature that an adult finds cold but manageable is hard work for a small child, and a temperature an adult finds serious is not a place to put one at all.

What each layer does and what to use for a child.

Three layers is the whole system. The instinct on a cold morning is to add a fourth, and it backfires: each additional layer compresses the one beneath it and squeezes out the trapped air doing the insulating, and it makes the jacket too tight to move in. The single biggest mistake

Cotton. A cotton t-shirt or a pair of cotton leggings under snow pants is the most common thing that goes wrong, and it is the one that a family cannot fix at the resort.

Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it against the skin, and a wet layer against a child who then sits on a chairlift in the wind is a child being actively refrigerated. Wool and synthetics move that moisture outward and keep insulating when damp. Extremities are where the day is won or lost

  • Mittens, not gloves, and two pairs. Mittens are warmer at the same insulation because fingers share heat, and they are far easier for a small child to put on. The first pair is soaked by lunch and there is no drying them on a mountain, so the spare pair in your pocket is the single most useful thing you carry. Sizing method here.
  • One thin pair of wool socks. Not two, not thick. Bulk in a boot restricts circulation and makes feet colder, which is counterintuitive enough that it has its own page.
  • A neck gaiter, never a scarf. A loose scarf on a lift is a genuine hazard. A gaiter also closes the chimney at the neck through which warm air escapes. Options here.
  • Cover the face on a cold day. Cheeks and the strip of forehead between helmet and goggles are the first places to be affected by the cold. Closing that gap matters more than any amount of torso insulation.
  • Nothing under the helmet except a thin liner. A thick hat changes the fit. The reason is here.

The checks that beat asking

Do these on a schedule rather than when someone complains. Every hour is about right, and it takes twenty seconds.

  • Hand on a cheek. Bare skin against bare skin. Cold and pale is the signal; ask them to come inside rather than negotiating.
  • Ask them to wiggle their fingers, and watch. A child who says “yes” and cannot do it is the one you were checking for.
  • Check the back of the neck for damp. Damp means they have overheated and are about to get cold. Drop a layer or vent the jacket now, not later.
  • Look at the gap between goggles and helmet. Exposed forehead is exposed skin.
  • Check the wrists. Between glove cuff and jacket sleeve is the gap nobody looks at and where snow gets in.

Overheating is the other half

Half of the times a child gets cold, they got hot first. Sidestepping, falling over, being carried up a slope and generally working hard in a fully insulated outfit produces sweat, and then twenty minutes on a chairlift turns that sweat into the problem.

The fixes are the same as for adults and are mostly free: open the jacket on the walk from the car, use the pit zips if the jacket has them, take the fleece off before the lesson if the sun is out, and get them inside before they are soaked rather than after.

Food and water are part of the clothing system

Your body makes heat from fuel and moves it with blood volume, so a child who has not eaten since breakfast and has drunk nothing is going to be cold regardless of what they are wearing. Cold air suppresses thirst, so they will not ask.

Make water a rule at every lift rather than an offer, and keep something sweet in a pocket for the mid-morning dip. Every ski instructor does this and it is not a bribe, it is fuel. The hydration page covers what freezes and what does not.

Plan the day around it

  • Half days below about 15F wind chill. Morning only, then stop.
  • Indoors every hour or so regardless. Twenty minutes and a hot drink resets a child completely.
  • Stop while it is still fun. The last hour is what they remember, and a child who finishes wanting more comes back next winter.
  • Have a fallback. If it is genuinely too cold, an hour of sledding at the base is a better day than a miserable one on a chairlift.
