Why this site exists

Ski shops are staffed by people who ski a hundred days a year, and that is exactly why they are hard to buy from if you ski four. The answers come pitched at a level that assumes you already know what a shell is, what MIPS stands for, what mondopoint means, and roughly what things should cost. If you do not, you get to choose between asking a question you feel stupid asking and buying the wrong thing.

Edge & Powder is written for the family that skis once a year and would like to size a child’s helmet and decide whether to buy or rent without being made to feel like an outsider. Every jargon term gets a plain-English gloss the first time it appears. Nothing here assumes you have done this before.

Who writes it

Sawyer V.. An enthusiast who is genuinely into this: I read the manuals, compile the published specifications, and do the arithmetic. No lab coat.

That framing is deliberate and it is the honest one. I am not a mountain guide, a boot fitter, a ski patroller or an instructor, I hold no certification in this field, and I have not tested the gear on this site. Plenty of publishers in this category do have those things, and where their testing is genuinely useful you should read them. What I can offer is a different thing: published figures, compiled carefully, with the arithmetic shown so you can check it rather than trust it.

What that looks like in practice

• Sizing charts built on a measurement you take at home, not on a table of ages. Two seven-year-olds can be a full helmet size apart.
• Cost arithmetic with the inputs on the page. Break-even day counts, cost per day on snow, and what changes when a second child inherits the jacket.
• Picks chosen on published certifications and specifications, with the working printed under every score. The whole method is published.
• An answer that sometimes costs us money. Where the arithmetic says rent, the page says rent, and there is no commission in a rental.

The limitation, stated plainly

We have not tested this gear. We do not have a lab, we do not have units on loan, and we do not accept free product. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty helmets. We have not tested any, and we say so.

That means there are questions this site genuinely cannot answer: whether a particular helmet is comfortable on your head shape, how a jacket breathes on a warm spring afternoon, whether a goggle’s optics suit flat light. Those are real questions and the honest answer is that we do not know. What we will never do is invent an answer to them.
