Mid layers: the layer everyone gets wrong
Base layers and jackets get all the attention. The layer in the middle is the one you take off at eleven and put back on at two, and choosing it badly is why people are cold.

The short answer
A mid layer traps warm air between your base layer and your shell. Fleece is the default: it breathes well, keeps working damp, and packs badly. Synthetic fill is warmer for its weight and also works damp. Down is the warmest and lightest and stops working when wet, which is why it belongs in the lodge rather than under a shell. Carry one, not two, and choose it so you can take it off without removing the jacket.

What the middle layer is actually doing
The three-layer system is often explained as if each layer has a mysterious function. It is simpler than that. The base layer moves sweat off your skin. The shell keeps wind and snow out. The mid layer is insulation, and insulation is just still air held in place.
That framing tells you what matters. Loft - how much air the layer traps - is warmth. Breathability is whether the sweat your base layer moved can keep going outward. And how it behaves damp decides whether it is still working at two in the afternoon, because at some point on a ski day something will be damp.

The row that decides it is the third. A down jacket that gets wet does not merely become less warm, it becomes close to useless, because down insulates by lofting and wet down cannot loft. Under a waterproof shell on a resort day the wetness usually comes from the inside, as sweat, which is exactly what happens when a beginner sidesteps up a slope for twenty minutes.
Down is genuinely excellent for the parts of a ski trip that are not skiing: the walk to dinner, the drive, standing at the bottom watching a lesson. It is simply the wrong tool inside a layering system.
Fleece, and the weight numbers
Fleece is published by weight in grams per square meter, usually 100, 200 or 300. The numbers are more useful than they look:
- 100-weight: a thin grid or micro fleece. Best for someone who runs warm, or as the extra layer on a cold day over a mid-weight base layer.
- 200-weight: the standard mid layer. If you buy one fleece for skiing, this is it.
- 300-weight: genuinely warm and genuinely bulky. Too much under a jacket for most people, and it makes the jacket fit badly.
Grid fleece - the kind with a waffle pattern on the inside - is worth seeking out. The grid holds air in the raised sections and lets moisture move through the channels, which makes it noticeably better at handling sweat than flat fleece of the same weight.
Wool as a mid layer
A heavier merino layer works as a mid layer as well as a base layer, and it has the same property that makes wool good next to skin: it keeps insulating when damp and it does not smell after several days. How many layers, honestly
One mid layer. The instinct on a cold morning is to put on everything you own, and it backfires for a specific reason: each extra layer compresses the one beneath it, squeezing out the trapped air that was doing the insulating. Three thin layers compressed inside a fitted jacket are warmer than two but not by as much as you would expect, and past a point they are colder.
The other cost is fit. Ski outerwear is already cut with room for a base layer and a mid layer, and adding a third makes the jacket tight in the shoulders, which restricts movement and pushes air out at the cuffs and hem. The jacket sizing page explains why sizing up does not fix that.
If one mid layer is not enough for the conditions, the right response is a warmer one, not a second one - and to check the things that are actually making you cold, which are usually exposure and extremities rather than torso insulation.
The three-in-one shortcut
An interchange jacket is a shell with a zip-out insulated liner, so the mid layer and the shell are sold together and can be worn separately. Columbia publishes the Whirlibird V this way and Wantdo publishes a fleece-liner version.
For a family that skis one week a year and spends the rest of the winter in a cold parking lot, that is genuinely two purchases avoided. The catch is that you cannot take the liner off mid-run without taking the shell off too, which is the exact adjustment a mid layer exists to allow. Children
Same principle, applied more carefully, because children are worse at telling you they are overheating than at telling you they are cold. A 100 or 200-weight fleece under a waterproof jacket is the whole system for most conditions.
The thing to avoid is a big padded coat as the mid layer under a shell, which is what tends to happen when a family uses the school winter coat as an inner layer. What to buy
- One full-zip 200-weight fleece, ideally grid fleece, is the default answer and covers most resort days.
- A light synthetic-fill jacket instead, if you run cold or ski in genuinely cold places. It packs down for the days you do not need it.
- Down, for off the mountain only. Excellent for the drive and dinner, wrong under a shell.
- Full zip, not a pullover. So you can vent it or remove it without taking the jacket off.
- No cotton hoodies. They hold sweat, stay wet all day and insulate at that point roughly as well as a wet towel. The what-not-to-wear page is blunt about it.

What should I wear as a mid layer for skiing?
A full-zip 200-weight fleece is the default and covers most resort days. If you run cold or ski somewhere genuinely cold, a light synthetic-fill jacket is warmer for its weight and packs down. Choose a full zip so you can vent or remove it without taking your jacket off.
