Almost nobody buys ski gear in the right order. The cheapest items make the biggest difference and the most expensive ones should wait years.

The short answer
Buy in this order: socks and base layers, then gloves, then goggles, then a helmet, then outerwear, then boots, and skis or a board last, possibly never. That order is almost exactly the inverse of price, and it is deliberate: the cheap items are the ones that decide whether you are comfortable, and the expensive ones are the ones a rental shop supplies competently.

The principle behind the order
Three questions decide where anything sits on this list, and asking them in sequence produces the order above every time.
- Will a rental shop supply it at all? If not, it is a purchase whether you like it or not, and it goes first. Socks, base layers, gloves and goggles are all in this category - no shop will rent you anything that touches skin.
- Does fit matter to you specifically? A helmet and boots are fitted to a person. Skis are close to interchangeable at beginner speeds.
- What does it cost per day on snow? A pair of socks spread over many seasons is pennies a day. A pair of skis spread over five days a year for three years is not. The cost page publishes that arithmetic with every input shown.

Items one to four: buy them before your first trip
These four are not really a decision. The rental shop will not supply them, so either you own them or you ski without them, and the total is a small fraction of one day’s lift tickets.
The socks deserve a specific mention because they are the single best-value item on this entire site. Item five: the helmet, and why it flips fast
Helmets are the item where the rent-or-buy line moves earliest, for two reasons. The daily rental charge is small but recurring, and it approaches the purchase price of a certified helmet within about two seasons of a few days each. And rental fleets are stocked around the middle of the size chart, so anyone at either end of the range gets a worse fit than they would buying.

Item six: outerwear breaks the rules in a good way
A ski jacket is the one purchase on this list whose value is not confined to skiing. It is also a winter coat, and it gets worn on cold days from November to March regardless of whether anyone goes near a mountain.
That changes the arithmetic completely. Amortized over a whole winter rather than five days on snow, it is one of the cheapest items here, which is why it sits above boots and skis despite costing more than either socks or goggles. Item seven: boots, and the number that decides them
Boots are the first piece of hardware worth owning and the last one most families get to. The reason to own them is fit: a rental boot is chosen for the average foot and a boot that lets your heel lift makes steering a negotiation. The reason to wait is that boots are expensive, personal and worth being fitted for properly.

Item eight: skis, which may never be worth it
For a family skiing five days a year, buying skis may never make sense, and this site is comfortable saying so on a page that earns commission from ski links. A rental ski is well maintained, correctly sized, and set for the skier using it, and the whole cost disappears at the end of the week. A seasonal lease covers the middle ground for anyone doing five to twenty days.
If you do buy, buy a package with bindings included so there is one purchase and one shop appointment, because the binding still has to be set and tested, and buy short rather than long - the size chart settles it.
The thing that is not on the list
Lessons. They are not gear, so they do not appear in the table, and they outrank every single line in it. A family that spends the whole equipment budget on a lesson and rents everything else has a better trip than one that owns skis and has never been taught to turn.

For children, the order changes slightly
- Helmet moves to first. Rental fleets are thinnest at the smallest sizes and fit is a safety question. Measure first.
- Two pairs of mittens rather than one pair of gloves. The spare is worth more than any feature on the first pair.
- Outerwear moves up, because a child wears it every day of the winter and outgrows it rather than wearing it out - which also makes it the best thing to buy secondhand.

And whatever the order, check the calendar before you buy anything: March and April are the cheapest months of the year, and most of this list is safe to buy secondhand - with one absolute exception, which is the helmet.
