What is safe to buy used, and what never is
Secondhand is the cheapest route into a family ski kit, and two items on the list should never be bought that way. One of them will not even be serviced by a shop.

Buy used with care: boots (fit is personal and foam packs out) and skis (the bindings decide it). Never buy used: helmets, because impact damage is invisible, and goggles with a scratched or wiped inner lens, because the anti-fog treatment is gone and cannot be restored.

Helmets: the one absolute
A helmet works by crushing. The energy-absorbing liner deforms once, permanently, to spread an impact over time, and a liner that has already done that is cosmetically identical to one that has not. A helmet that was dropped hard onto a parking lot from a car roof has spent part of its life, and there is no inspection that reveals it.
You are also buying an unknown age. Materials degrade, and a seller genuinely does not always remember which season a helmet was bought. Both problems are covered in detail on the helmet care and replacement page, and both are unanswerable secondhand.
The good news is that this is the cheapest absolute rule on the site to follow. A certified new adult helmet with both published standards and a dial adjuster is available for well under a hundred dollars, and the cheap-versus-expensive comparison shows what the extra money above that actually buys, which is not more certification.
Skis: the bindings decide, and there is a rule
The ski itself is durable. Bases can be repaired, edges can be sharpened, scratches are cosmetic. The problem with used skis is the binding, and it is not a problem you can solve by inspecting it.
Binding manufacturers publish an annual indemnification list: the models they will stand behind if a shop mounts, adjusts or tests them. A shop that services a binding not on that year’s list assumes the liability itself if the binding fails to release, which is why the answer at the counter is usually a flat no. Models typically stay on the list for roughly eight to twelve years, and drop off sooner if they fail release testing at higher rates.
The practical consequence is specific. A used pair of skis whose bindings are off the current list cannot be adjusted to your height, weight and boot sole length by any reputable shop, and that adjustment is not something to do yourself. So a cheap pair of used skis can turn out to be unusable at any price.
- Before you buy, get the binding make, model and year. Then ask a local shop whether they will service it. That is a free phone call and it settles the whole purchase.
- Budget for a shop visit regardless. Even an indemnified binding needs the release setting recalculated for the new owner and the new boot.
- Check the base and edges in daylight. A core shot, meaning a gouge deep enough to expose the material under the base, is a repair rather than a deal-breaker, but it is a bargaining point. What can and cannot be fixed at home is on its own page.
Boots: possible, but understand what you are buying
A ski boot liner is foam that compresses to the shape of the foot inside it over the first several days of use. That is called packing out, and it is why a boot feels tight when new and correct later. A used boot has already packed out to somebody else’s foot, and it will not fully re-form to yours.
That said, a lightly used boot in your exact size, in a shell shape that suits your foot, is a genuine bargain, and boots are the item most families eventually want to own. Two things make a used pair worth considering: a low number of days on it, and the option to replace the liner separately, which is possible with many boots and turns a used shell into a nearly new boot. Check the sole. Ski boot soles wear at the toe and heel, and the boot sole is what the binding grips, so a badly worn sole affects release behavior. Many boots have replaceable sole blocks; check whether these do before buying. And read the rent-or-buy page on boots first, because for a family skiing a handful of days a year, renting boots remains defensible.
Goggles: one specific thing to inspect
Turn the goggle over and look at the inner surface of the lens in good light. That surface carries the anti-fog treatment, it is applied in manufacturing, and it is destroyed by wiping. A previous owner who wiped the inside with a sleeve has removed it permanently, and the goggle will fog in conditions where a new one would not.
Also check the face foam is intact and still springy, and that the strap elastic has not gone slack. Neither is repairable. If the inner lens is genuinely untouched and the foam is good, a used goggle is a reasonable buy, and if the model takes interchangeable lenses a new lens fixes everything except the foam. Where to look, and what to expect
- Ski swaps. Usually run by a club or a school in autumn. Volume, low prices, and often a shop technician on site who will tell you whether a binding is serviceable. The best option if there is one near you.
- Shop used sections and end-of-season rental fleet sales. Gear that has been maintained by professionals and is being sold with the shop standing behind it. Expensive relative to a swap, cheap relative to new.
- Brand resale channels. Some outdoor brands run their own used-gear resale, which is where secondhand outerwear is easiest to buy with confidence.
- Local classifieds. Cheapest, and the one where you must get the binding model before you drive anywhere.
For children, used is almost always right
Children outgrow gear rather than wearing it out, which means the secondhand market for kids clothing is full of things worn for four days. Everything except the helmet is fair game, and the savings are large enough to change what a family trip costs. The order that saves the most money
For a family kitting out from nothing, the cheapest sensible path is: buy the helmets new, buy the socks new because they are cheap and one item genuinely carries a lifetime guarantee, buy all the outerwear used, rent or lease the hardware for the first season or two, and then buy boots when you know how much you will ski. Skip this one. It is a legitimately certified helmet and it is cheap, but every other adult pick here includes a rotational-impact liner and the cheapest of those is $69.99. Twenty-two dollars is not the place to economize on the one feature that addresses the kind of impact skiers actually have.
