Are expensive ski helmets safer? What the published figures say

Four helmets from $47.99 to $125, compared only on what their makers publish. The safety answer and the value answer are not the same answer.

The short answer

On published figures, no: a $125 ski helmet is not meaningfully safer than a $69.99 one, because they carry the same certifications and both include a rotational-impact liner. What the extra money buys is size range, fit adjustment, venting, weight and warranty. The one price step that is about safety is the jump from a helmet with no rotational system to one that has one, which on these four picks costs $22.

What this page compares, and what it cannot

We have not tested any of these helmets and we do not have impact data of our own. Nobody selling you a helmet does either, unless they are a testing laboratory. What exists publicly is the certification each maker names for that specific model, whether it publishes a rotational-impact system, how many sizes it publishes, the published warranty term, and the price.

That is what this comparison uses, and it is a narrower claim than “safest”. A certification is a pass or fail against a defined test, not a score, so two certified helmets are both certified and one of them is not more certified than the other. Read the first row. The single largest safety-relevant difference in this whole table is between column one and column two, and it costs $22. Everything after that is comfort, fit and finish, priced at up to a further $55.

The one upgrade that is about safety

A rotational-impact system such as Mips is a low-friction layer inside the helmet that allows a small amount of movement between the shell and your head during an angled impact. Most real falls are angled rather than straight down, so this is the feature designed for the kind of crash skiers actually have.

It is also the feature that has moved furthest down the price ladder in recent years. A rotational liner used to be a premium item and now appears on helmets under $70 published. That is the single most useful thing to know when shopping: you no longer have to spend a lot to get it. So what does the extra $55 actually buy?

Real things, none of which is a safety claim:

  • Size range. The most underrated spec on a helmet. A helmet that does not exist in your head circumference is not a helmet for you, and more published sizes means a better chance of the shell itself fitting before the dial does anything. This is the axis where the Smith earns its price.
  • Fit adjustment. A dial adjuster at the back tightens the cradle within a size. Almost every helmet has one now; the difference at the top of the market is range and precision rather than presence.
  • Venting. Adjustable vents let you dump heat on a warm spring afternoon and close down in January. Fixed vents do neither. This matters more than people expect, because an overheating child takes the helmet off.
  • Weight and padding. Lighter shells and better liners are more comfortable at hour six. This is genuine, and it is comfort rather than protection.
  • Goggle integration. Brow shape, clip design and how the vents line up with the goggle frame. The gap between helmet and goggle is a real problem and premium helmets tend to solve it better within their own brand.
  • Warranty. Published terms across these four run from no stated term at all up to three years, which is a real difference in what you are owed if something fails. The cost-per-day view changes the argument

A helmet is not a consumable. Amortized over five seasons at five days each, the published spread across these four helmets is roughly $1.92 to $5.00 a day — about three dollars a day between the cheapest certified helmet on the site and the most expensive one.

Put that next to a lift ticket and the premium becomes small enough that fit should decide it rather than price. Which is our actual recommendation: buy the helmet with a rotational liner that fits your head best, in whatever price band that turns out to be. For children, the arithmetic flips

Children outgrow helmets on a one-to-two-season clock, so the amortization window is much shorter and a premium helmet costs several times as much per day as it does for an adult. That is the main reason we point families at certified rotational-liner helmets at the bottom of the price range for children rather than the top. The two places never to economize

  • A used helmet from a stranger. Foam damage is invisible and a helmet that has taken an impact has already done its job. There is no inspection you can perform that establishes otherwise.
  • A helmet that does not fit. A correctly certified helmet in the wrong size protects worse than an uncertified helmet in the right one. It should not move when you shake your head with the chin strap undone. The fit test is here.

Are expensive ski helmets safer?

Not meaningfully, once both helmets carry the same certification and both include a rotational-impact liner. Certification is a pass or fail rather than a score. The extra money buys size range, fit adjustment, venting, weight and warranty.

Is a $50 ski helmet good enough?

If it publishes a recognized certification, it is a genuine helmet. The gap worth closing is the rotational-impact liner, which on our picks costs about $22 more. Most angled falls are the kind that system is designed for, which makes that the one upgrade we would insist on.

Is Mips worth paying extra for?

It is the one feature on this page we would pay for, because it addresses angled impacts rather than straight-down ones and most real falls are angled. It now appears on helmets under $70 published, so the premium is much smaller than it used to be.

How much should I spend on a ski helmet?

Enough for a certified helmet with a rotational liner that fits your head, which on published prices starts around $70. Past that, spend on fit rather than price: over five seasons the difference between the cheapest and most expensive helmet here is about three dollars a day.

Can I buy a second-hand ski helmet to save money?

No. Impact damage to the foam liner is invisible from the outside, and a helmet that has taken a hit has already done its job. There is no inspection that establishes a used helmet is intact.
