Rust: the most common problem and the easiest fix
Ski edges are steel and steel rusts. It usually appears after skis have been put away wet, after a drive on salted roads with skis on the roof, or over a summer in a damp garage. Surface rust looks alarming and is trivial.
- Lay the ski on its side so the edge faces up, base toward you, and secure it.
- Take the tuning stone from your kit, wet it lightly, and run it along the edge in smooth strokes from tip to tail, flat against the edge surface rather than at an angle.
- Keep going until the steel is bright. Wipe, and repeat on the base side of the edge and on the other ski.
- Dry the edges thoroughly, then wax the base, which also protects the edges.
The reason a stone rather than a file: a stone removes the oxide layer without removing enough metal to change the bevel. A file removes metal, and if it is not in a guide it removes it unevenly. Waxing after is not optional here, because it is what stops the rust coming straight back.
Prevention is easier than the cure. Wipe the edges dry every time skis come off a car, and never store them wet. The end-of-season storage page is largely a page about this one failure mode.
Burrs: the thing that makes a ski catch
Hit a rock and the edge does not simply dent, it throws up a raised lip of steel called a burr. A burr catches on the snow when the ski is flat, which feels like the ski suddenly grabbing mid-turn. It is one of the most common causes of an unexplained fall on a ski that previously felt fine.
Finding one takes ten seconds: run a fingernail lightly along the edge. Where it snags, there is a burr. The fix is the same stone, worked over the raised area until the fingernail runs smoothly.
What you are not doing is sharpening. Removing a burr means knocking down the metal that has been pushed up above the surface. Sharpening means cutting a defined bevel angle on both the base side and the side wall, and that is done with a file in an angle guide by someone who knows what bevel the ski was built with.
Base gouges: what a P-tex candle actually does
A ski base is polyethylene, and P-tex is the same material in stick form. You melt it into the gouge, let it cool, and scrape the excess flat. The published tune kits in this ledger include P-tex, which the cheapest kits leave out and which is the reason to prefer a complete kit.
- Clean the gouge. Any dirt in it means the repair does not bond and lifts out on the first run.
- Light the P-tex stick and let it burn until the flame settles. A sooty flame puts carbon into the repair and leaves it black and weak; hold it close to the base and let it drip cleanly.
- Drip into the gouge, slightly overfilling it. Let it cool completely, which takes longer than you expect.
- Scrape flat with a sharp plastic scraper, working until the repair is level with the base around it. A proud repair drags; a hollow one does nothing.
- Wax the ski afterward.
This is genuinely worth doing for a family, because a deep gouge left open lets water into the base material and spreads. It is also the repair that a rental shop charges for, which is worth knowing when you are asked to sign a damage waiver on a seasonal lease.
How to tell a gouge from a core shot
Look at the color at the bottom of the damage. A base is usually black or a single solid color all the way through, so a gouge shows the same color as the surface. If you can see a different material, often lighter, fibrous or wood-colored, the damage has gone through the base into the core. That is a core shot and it is a shop repair, because water reaching the core is what delaminates a ski.
What a shop tune is actually doing
Worth knowing so you can judge whether you need one. A full tune is typically three operations. A base grind, which uses a stone to make the base flat again and to cut a new structure into it. Edge work, which files a specific bevel angle on the base side and the side of the edge. And a wax and polish.
None of those three has a good home equivalent, and the first two matter. A ski whose base has gone concave or convex from wear does not behave predictably, and no amount of waxing fixes it. If a ski has had several seasons and feels vague, a shop tune is the answer rather than more wax.

Snowboards, and used skis
Everything here applies to a snowboard unchanged; the surfaces are the same materials and the same failures occur. The only practical difference is that a board is wider, so a base repair takes a little more P-tex.
