The short answer
Pull the liners out of the shells at the end of every ski day, open every buckle, and dry both parts in moving air at room temperature. Never use direct heat: a radiator, a stove or a hot vent hardens and shrinks liner foam. A liner packs out over its first several days, which is why a boot feels tight when new and correct later, and it is also why a liner eventually needs replacing before the shell does.

A ski boot is two products
The shell is rigid plastic and it lasts a very long time. The liner is foam and fabric, it is the part your foot actually touches, and it is doing all the work that fit depends on. Almost everything people describe as a boot problem is a liner problem, and almost everything that shortens a boot’s life is something that happened to the liner.
Once you see it that way the care routine becomes obvious. The shell needs almost nothing. The liner needs to come out, dry properly, and occasionally be washed, and it needs to be protected from heat and from being left compressed.
The end-of-day routine, which takes two minutes
- Undo every buckle and the power strap fully. Not loosened: open. A boot stored buckled keeps the shell deformed and keeps the liner compressed.
- Pull the liner out. Hold the shell with one hand, grip the liner firmly at the cuff with the other, and pull upward and slightly forward. The first time is stiff; after that it is easy.
- Pull the tongue forward and open the liner up. Air has to reach the inside, not just the outside.
- Stand both parts somewhere with moving air at room temperature. A hallway, a bedroom, anywhere that is not a boot bag and not next to a heat source.
- Take the footbeds out too if they lift out. They hold more moisture than anything else in the boot.
That is the whole routine, it costs nothing, and it is the entire content of the overnight drying page applied to one item. Done every day, it more or less eliminates the smell problem and it roughly doubles how long a liner stays supportive.
Why direct heat is the one thing that ruins a liner
Liner foam is heat-sensitive by design. In many boots it is heat-moldable on purpose: a shop warms it, you stand in it, and it takes the shape of your foot. That same sensitivity is why an uncontrolled heat source is destructive.
A radiator, a wood stove, a hot air vent or a hairdryer can harden and shrink the foam, and can separate glued construction. This is not a marginal risk; it is the most common way people permanently ruin a boot that was otherwise fine.
It is also why every purpose-made dryer runs deliberately low. DryGuy publishes 105F on its forced-air units. PEET publishes 36 watts of fan-free convection and describes it as less than a low-wattage light bulb. Washing a liner without ruining it
Liners get washed less often than they should. Once a season is plenty for most households, and the trigger is smell rather than a calendar: a liner that smells has bacteria in the fabric, and drying alone will not remove it once it is established.
Check what your boot maker publishes for your specific model first, because machine-washability differs. As a general approach that suits almost any liner:
- Take the liner out and remove the footbed.
- Hand wash in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent. Not hot water, which is heat, and not fabric softener, which coats fibers.
- Squeeze gently rather than wringing. Wringing a liner distorts the foam and it does not come back.
- Rinse thoroughly. Detergent left in the foam is what causes itching later.
- Press out water in a towel, stuff loosely with paper to hold the shape, and air dry away from any heat source. This takes a day or two and cannot be hurried. A tumble dryer will shrink it.
Wash the footbeds separately in the same way. If the smell survives a wash, the footbed is usually the culprit, and footbeds are cheap to replace where liners are not.
The upstream fix
Most liner smell starts with the sock. A cotton sock holds moisture against the foot all day and delivers it into the liner; a thin merino sock does not, and it keeps working when damp. Packing out: what it is and why it matters when buying
Over the first several days of use, liner foam compresses under the pressure points of your foot and takes their shape. That is packing out, and it is why a properly fitted boot feels tight and slightly alarming when new and correct after a few days. A boot that feels perfect in the shop will usually feel loose by the end of the season.
Two consequences follow. When buying new, buy the boot that feels snug rather than the one that feels comfortable, which is the argument on the boots page and on the ski boot buying guide. And when buying used, understand that the liner has already packed out to somebody else’s foot and will not fully re-form to yours, which is why the used-gear page puts boots in the with-care column rather than the buy-freely one.
When the liner is finished but the boot is not
A liner has a shorter life than a shell, and the failure is gradual: the boot starts to feel loose, your heel begins to lift, and you find yourself buckling tighter to compensate. That is a packed-out liner rather than a worn-out boot.
- Heel lift that was not there before. The clearest sign.
- Buckling a notch tighter than you used to. Compensating for volume that used to be foam.
- Visible compression of the ankle padding. The foam around the ankle pocket has gone flat.
- Persistent smell that survives washing. Cosmetic rather than structural, but it is a reason people replace liners.
Many boots take replacement liners, and a new liner in a good shell is substantially cheaper than a new boot. It is worth asking a shop before assuming the boot is done, and it is also the reason a used boot with a replaceable liner can be a genuine bargain.
Summer storage
Liners out, buckles closed loosely on the shells so they hold their shape without deforming, both parts stored somewhere dry and not hot. A garage that reaches high summer temperatures is not a good place for boot foam, and neither is an attic. Footbeds out and stored flat.
