Is MIPS worth it on a ski helmet?

The short answer
Yes, on price alone. MIPS is a low-friction layer inside a helmet that lets the shell rotate a few millimeters against your head during an angled impact, which is what most real crashes are. On the helmets we compared, adding it costs about $22, or roughly nine cents a day on snow over five seasons. At that price the question is not whether it is worth it but whether there is any reason to buy without it.

What it actually is, physically
MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System, which is a name that explains nothing. Here is the physical description: inside the helmet, between the foam liner and your head, there is a thin plastic layer attached to the helmet by elastomeric anchors. It can slide a few millimeters in any direction before those anchors resist it.
You can see it when you pick a helmet up: a yellow or clear slip layer sitting inside the padding. Push it sideways with a finger and it moves, then springs back.
Why a few millimeters of slide matters
A helmet’s foam liner handles one thing well: a straight-on impact, which it absorbs by crushing. That is what the certification tests measure, and every certified helmet does it.
Real crashes are rarely straight on. A skier who catches an edge is moving forward while falling sideways, and hits the snow at an angle. An angled impact does not just push the head, it turns it, and rotational acceleration of the head is a distinct mechanism from linear impact. The slip layer exists to let the helmet take some of that rotation instead of passing all of it to the head.
What it actually costs
This is the part nobody puts a number on, and it is the part that settles the question.

The step from no rotational liner to one is 88 cents a day. Framed against a lift ticket, a rental, a tank of gas or a single resort lunch, that is not a real decision. It is the cheapest safety upgrade available anywhere in a ski kit.
MIPS is not the only such system
Several brands make their own rotational-management systems rather than licensing MIPS: a rotating internal cradle, a shell that shears against the liner, or a collapsing structure that does both. Our scoring credits a published rotational-impact system, whatever it is called, rather than the MIPS brand specifically, because scoring a trademark rather than a mechanism would be scoring marketing.
What matters when you are shopping is that the maker publishes one at all. A helmet that names no rotational system does not have one.
What it does not replace
- Certification. A rotational liner in an uncertified helmet is a feature bolted to an unknown. Look for ASTM F2040 or CE EN 1077 first and the liner second. What those standards test.
- Fit. A helmet that slides on your head is not protecting you, with or without a slip layer inside it. The fit check.
- Replacement after an impact. The foam still crushes and still does not recover. Retire the helmet.
When it is genuinely not the deciding factor
Two cases, honestly stated. If your budget is fixed and the choice is between a certified helmet without a rotational liner today or no helmet at all, buy the certified helmet. Something certified on the head beats a better helmet in a wish list.

Skip this one. It is here as the comparison point rather than a recommendation. It is properly certified and has a dial, and it is the helmet you would buy if a rotational liner did not exist. It does exist, and it costs about nine cents a day more.
Certified to both standards at under fifty dollars, with a dial adjuster and ten vents. What it does not have, at any price or size, is a rotational-impact liner, and that is the one thing on this page worth paying for.

Is MIPS worth it for a beginner?
Arguably more so. Beginners fall more often and fall in the way this is designed for: catching an edge and arriving at the snow at an angle rather than straight on.
What does MIPS stand for?

Do kids ski helmets have MIPS?

MIPS is one brand of rotational-impact system and by far the most common. Several helmet makers build their own instead. Our scoring credits a published rotational system whatever it is called.
Can you add MIPS to a helmet you already own?
No. It is built into the helmet during manufacture, sitting between the liner and the head, and there is no aftermarket version. If you want one, it is a new helmet.
