How to stop ski goggles fogging up
Fogging is mostly caused by four habits, not by cheap goggles. Here is what causes it, what the construction does about it, and what to do on the mountain.

The short answer
Goggles fog when warm damp air from your face reaches a cold lens. The four biggest causes are all habits rather than equipment: pulling a neck gaiter up over your nose so your breath goes into the goggle, parking the goggles on your forehead on the lift, wiping the inside of the lens, and blocking the vents with a hat. Fix those four and most fogging stops.

Why it happens, in one paragraph
Warm air holds more water than cold air. The air near your face is warm and damp; the inner surface of a goggle lens is cold. When that warm air touches the cold surface it cannot hold the water any more and drops it onto the lens as condensation. Everything below is either stopping the warm damp air getting there, or stopping the lens being cold.
The four habits
- Do not pull a neck gaiter over your nose. This is the largest single cause and almost nobody realizes it. A gaiter across the nose funnels every breath upward, straight into the bottom of the goggle. If you need your face covered, use a balaclava with a proper breathing area, or pull the gaiter below your nose.
- Do not park goggles on your forehead. The warmest, dampest air on your entire body is rising off your forehead and out of your helmet. Putting a cold lens directly in that stream fogs it in seconds and it will not clear again for the rest of the run. Take them off entirely and hang them round your neck, or leave them on.
- Never wipe the inside of the lens. Anti-fog is a coating bonded to the inner pane, and a glove removes it permanently. One wipe on the first morning is why a goggle fogs constantly for the rest of its life. If the inside is wet, shake the water out and let it air dry.
- Keep the vents clear. Goggle frames have vents at the top and bottom, and a hat pulled down, a helmet sitting low, or a jacket collar pulled up will block them. The vents are the only thing moving dry air across the lens.
What the construction does
- A double lens is two panes with a sealed air gap between them. The air gap insulates, so the inner pane sits closer to your face temperature and is therefore much less likely to reach the dew point. This is the single most effective anti-fog feature and every goggle worth buying has it.
- An anti-fog treatment is a hydrophilic coating on the inner pane that spreads condensation into a thin even film instead of droplets. You can still see through a film. This is what a glove wipe destroys.
- Frame venting and foam move dry air across the inner pane. More venting is warmer on your face and better against fog, which is a real trade-off in very cold weather.
What to do when they fog mid-run
- Stop somewhere safe and take them off. Skiing on with a fogged lens is how people hit things.
- Hold them into the wind, lens facing forward. Moving dry air clears a light fog in under a minute without touching anything.
- Shake, do not wipe. If there is standing water inside, shake it out with a flick.
- On the lift, hold them out in the airflow rather than putting them inside your jacket, where it is warm and damp.
- If they are properly wet inside, go in and dry them. A twenty-minute lunch with the goggles face up on a table beats fighting them all afternoon.
Between days
Dry them face up at room temperature, not on a radiator or a heat vent, which can distort the frame and the face foam. Store them in the soft bag they came in; that bag is a lens cloth, not packaging. Do not leave them in a cold car overnight and then put them straight onto a warm face at 9am, which fogs them before the first run.
Anti-fog sprays and inserts
Anti-fog sprays and wipes made for eyewear can help, especially on a goggle whose original coating has already been wiped off. Use one made for optics rather than a car windshield product.
Battery-powered fan goggles exist and genuinely work. They are heavy, they cost a great deal, and for a family skiing five days a year they are solving a problem that the four habits above already solve for nothing.
If you wear glasses
Everything here applies with more force, because there are two surfaces and your glasses sit closest to the warm air off your skin. Use an over-the-glasses frame so the two lenses are not in contact, and keep a gaiter off your nose without exception. The full guide to skiing in glasses is here.

Questions people actually ask
How do you keep ski goggles from fogging?
Keep a neck gaiter off your nose, never park goggles on your forehead, never wipe the inside of the lens, and keep the frame vents clear of hats and collars. Those four habits prevent most fogging regardless of what the goggles cost.
Can you wipe the inside of ski goggles?
No. The anti-fog treatment is a coating on the inner pane and a glove or a sleeve removes it permanently. Shake the water out and let them air dry instead.
Why do my goggles fog on the chairlift?
Because you stopped moving, so there is no airflow through the vents, and usually because the goggles went up onto your forehead where the warmest air on your body is. Leave them on, or take them off completely.
Do more expensive goggles fog less?
Not reliably. What reduces fogging is a double lens with an air gap, a treated inner pane, clear vents and a good seal at the nose, all of which exist at moderate prices. Habits matter at least as much as price.
Does anti-fog spray work on ski goggles?
It can, particularly on a lens whose factory coating has already been wiped off. Use a product made for optics rather than an automotive one, and apply it gently.
