Goggle VLT and lens color, explained without the marketing
VLT is the only lens spec worth shopping on. Here is what each band is for, what color adds on top of it, and what to buy if you own one lens.

The short answer
VLT stands for visible light transmission: the percentage of available light the lens lets through. A 10% lens is dark and for bright sun. A 60% lens is pale and for snowfall or dusk. Around 25-45% is the most useful single lens for a family that skis whatever weather the trip brings. The number matters; the color is mostly what the number looks like.

Most family ski days in the US live in the S1 to S2 range. Bluebird days exist and they photograph well, which is why the shelves are full of very dark mirrored lenses and why so many people buy the wrong one.
What lens color actually does
Two separate things get called lens color and it is worth splitting them.
- The tint determines the VLT. A dark gray or black lens transmits little light; a clear or pale yellow lens transmits a lot. This is the part that matters.
- The mirror coating on the outside reduces glare and makes the lens look reflective. It also lowers VLT a little. It is mostly cosmetic and mostly what you are looking at on a shelf.
Within a VLT band, the tint does change what you see. Rose, amber and yellow tints increase contrast in flat light, which is why they are the traditional snowfall choice: they make the difference between a bump and a shadow easier to read. Gray tints keep colors truer, which some people prefer in bright sun.
If you are buying one lens
Aim for 25% to 45%. It is a genuine compromise: slightly bright in full sun, slightly dark in heavy snowfall, and correct on the overcast-to-mixed days that make up most of a family ski trip.

If you are buying two
The pairing that covers almost everything is a lens around 15% for sun and a lens around 50-60% for storms. Two lenses in that range beat any single lens at both ends.

Photochromic lenses
A photochromic lens darkens in bright light and lightens when it gets dull, covering a range rather than a point. It is the one-lens answer for someone who does not want to carry a second.
The trade-offs, honestly: they cost more, the transition takes a minute or two rather than being instant, and the published range is narrower than swapping lenses gives you. Makers publish the range as two VLT figures, and that is the number to check rather than the word photochromic.
Flat light, which is where lens choice actually pays
Flat light is an overcast day where the snow and the sky are the same shade of white and the surface loses all definition. You cannot see bumps, dips or the edge of a groomed run, and it is genuinely unnerving.
A high-VLT lens in a rose, amber or yellow tint is the fix, and it is the single situation where changing lenses transforms a day. If you ski somewhere that gets a lot of cloud, this is where a second lens earns its money and a dark mirrored lens is actively dangerous.
Making a lens last
- Never wipe the inside. The anti-fog treatment is a coating and a glove takes it off permanently. The full anti-fog guide.
- Use the bag it came in. The soft bag is a lens cloth, not packaging.
- Dry them face up, at room temperature. Not on a radiator, which can distort the frame and the foam.

What does VLT mean on ski goggles?
Visible light transmission: the percentage of available light the lens lets through. Low numbers are dark lenses for sun, high numbers are pale lenses for snowfall and dusk.
