Everything gets checked in October and nothing gets checked again until April. The failures that ruin a trip all become visible somewhere in the middle.

The short answer
Once, around the middle of the season, spend twenty minutes on six things: binding indicator numbers match on both skis, boot soles are not badly worn, bases and edges have no new gouges or rust, the helmet has not taken a hit, seam tape inside the jacket is still bonded, and everything actually still fits the children. Each one catches a problem that is much worse discovered on a trip.

Why the middle of the season
Ski gear gets attention twice: in October when it comes out, and in April when it goes away. In between, it takes all of its damage. A check somewhere around the halfway point catches problems while there is still time to fix them, and before the trip that they would otherwise ruin.
It is a twenty-minute job on a kitchen floor, and five of the six items need no tools at all.

Bindings: look, do not touch
Stand the skis together and look at the numbers on the toe and heel pieces. Both skis should read the same, and they should read what the shop set at the start of the season.
If one has drifted, that is a shop visit rather than a screwdriver job. The visible number is an indicator rather than a calibration, and the only meaningful check is a release test on a machine that measures actual torque. The bindings page explains what the setting is and where it comes from.
While you are there, step into each ski and out again. Both should click in cleanly and release with the lever. A binding that fights you in a warm garage will fight you harder in a cold parking lot.
Boots: the sole is the safety part
Turn the boots over. The toe and heel are what the binding grips, and both wear from walking on pavement, gravel and lodge floors. A rounded or chipped toe changes how the binding holds and releases, which is a genuine safety matter rather than a cosmetic one.
Many boots publish replaceable sole blocks; check whether yours do, because replacing them costs a fraction of a boot. And this is the argument for carrying boots to the lift in a bag rather than walking in them, which the boot bag page makes for entirely different reasons.
While the boots are out, check the liners. If your heel has started lifting and you find yourself buckling a notch tighter than you used to, that is a packed-out liner rather than a worn-out boot, and a replacement liner is far cheaper.
Bases and edges
Run a fingernail along each edge. Where it snags, there is a burr from a rock strike, and a burr makes the ski catch when it is running flat - which is a common cause of an unexplained fall. A tuning stone removes it in two minutes.
Then look at the bases in good light. New gouges since October are normal. What matters is whether any of them show a different color underneath, which means the damage has reached the core and needs a proper repair rather than a P-tex fill.
And check for rust along the steel, which shows up after a drive on salted roads or a wet trip put away damp. All of this is on the edge and base page, and the tools are in any basic tune kit.
Mid-season is also the natural moment for a wax. If the bases look chalky or pale along the edges, they are dry. The waxing sequence takes twenty minutes.
Helmet: the one where the honest answer is inconvenient
Two questions. Has it taken a hard impact since October - including being dropped onto a parking lot from a car roof? And does it still fit, particularly on a child?
A helmet manages impact by permanently crushing, and a liner that has already done that is cosmetically identical to one that has not. If the answer to the first question is yes, replace it, and the helmet care page explains why looking fine is not evidence.
On fit, check with whatever the wearer actually has on their head now. A child who wore nothing underneath in December and a balaclava in February has a helmet that fits differently in those two months. The liners page covers that.
Outerwear: two minutes with a tap
Run water over the shoulders of the jacket. If it beads and rolls off, the water-repellent finish is fine. If it soaks in and darkens the fabric, wash and reproof before the next trip - the cheapest performance recovery available.
Then turn the jacket inside out and look at the seam tape. Lifting at the edges or gone crispy is the failure that ends a jacket, and finding it in January means you can plan rather than discover it in the rain in March. Patch any tears while you are there, and clean and lubricate the zips.
Children: re-measure, do not assume
A child can move through a whole size band between October and February, and they will not mention that the helmet is tight or the boots hurt until it becomes a problem on a trip.
- Head circumference, against the helmet. Use the dial to take up or release the difference, and re-measure if the dial is near its limit. The chart.
- Feet, in the boots they will wear. Toes brushing the front when standing, pulling back when they flex forward.
- Jacket sleeves and pant hems. Wrists and ankles are where a child outgrows a garment first.

The whole thing on one line
Both indicator numbers match. Boot soles not rounded. Fingernail along the edges, eyes on the bases. Helmet has not been hit and still fits. Water beads on the jacket and the seam tape is bonded. The children have not outgrown anything. Twenty minutes, once, somewhere around the middle of the winter.
