A phone showing 80 percent will shut down under load below freezing, and it will do it at the exact moment you are trying to find the rest of your group.

The short answer

Carry the phone in an inside jacket pocket against a base layer, never in an outer pocket and never in a pack. Cold slows the chemistry in a lithium battery, so a phone reading 80 percent shuts down under load and then recovers once it warms - the charge was never gone. Do not mount a camera to the outside of a helmet: it changes how the shell behaves in an impact and most helmet makers say so.

Why a full battery dies at 20F

A lithium-ion battery stores energy in a chemical reaction, and chemical reactions slow down when they get cold. Two things follow. The battery cannot deliver current as fast, so a demand spike - the screen coming on, the radio searching for signal - can exceed what it can supply and the phone shuts down to protect itself. And the voltage sags, which the phone reads as a low battery even when it is not.

The practical consequence is the one everybody meets: the phone reports plenty of charge, you pull it out to send a message at the top of a lift, and it dies. Warm it up in an inside pocket for ten minutes and it comes back with most of the charge still there, because the energy was never actually consumed. Understanding that is most of the fix.

Most ski jackets publish an internal pocket for exactly this and most people never use it. The jacket features page lists it among the things worth checking before you buy, precisely because it is the difference between a phone that works all day and one that does not.

Two more habits. Turn the screen brightness down, which is the largest single current draw. And if you are somewhere with weak signal, put the phone in airplane mode between uses, because a radio hunting for a tower is the second largest.

Using a phone without taking a glove off

Capacitive touchscreens respond to conductive material, which skin is and most glove leather and synthetic shell fabric is not. Three approaches exist and they vary a lot in how well they work.

  • Conductive thread in the fingertips. Common on liner gloves and light gloves, rare and unreliable on a bulky insulated ski glove because the insulation puts too much distance between the thread and your finger.
  • A thin liner glove under the main glove. The version that actually works: take the outer glove off, use the phone in the liner, put the outer back on. Your hand never touches the air.
  • Mittens with a flip-back top. A niche product, and if you already prefer mittens for warmth, the one that solves this. The gloves-versus-mittens comparison covers the wider trade.

Whatever you use, attach the phone to something. A dropped phone at the top of a chairlift is gone until the snow melts, and a leash or a zipped pocket is the only reason that does not happen more often.

Action cameras: the helmet mount question

The obvious place to put a camera is the top of a helmet and it is the one place worth thinking twice about. Helmet manufacturers generally advise against attaching anything to the shell, for two reasons that are easy to understand: an adhesive mount interferes with the shell’s ability to slide across a surface, which is part of how it manages a glancing impact, and a rigid object on the outside creates a point load in a fall.

Some helmets publish integrated mount points designed to break away, which is a different thing and is fine. If yours does not, the helmet care page explains why the shell is not a mounting surface, and the alternatives are a chest harness, which also gives a more watchable angle, or a pole mount.

Cameras have the same battery problem, only worse

An action camera is a small battery driving a sensor and a screen in the wind. Run time in cold conditions is routinely a fraction of the published figure, and the published figure is usually measured at room temperature. Carry spare batteries in an inside pocket, swap them warm, and expect to get through more of them than the specification implies.

A short opinion on filming

The most-watched footage from any family ski trip is thirty seconds of a child getting off a magic carpet, filmed from the bottom of a slope with a phone. Nobody watches the ninety minutes of chest-mounted footage of a groomed run. If you are buying a camera to record a family trip rather than to make ski films, a phone used deliberately at four moments in the day beats a camera running continuously.

Why does my phone die in the cold?

Cold slows the chemical reaction inside a lithium battery, so it cannot deliver current fast enough for a demand spike and the voltage sags. The phone reads that as empty and shuts down to protect itself. Warm it in an inside pocket and most of the charge comes back, because it was never consumed.

Where should I keep my phone while skiing?
