Helmet audio and two-way radios: keeping a family in touch

Phones fail on a mountain for reasons that have nothing to do with signal. Radios do not, and the audio system that works with a helmet is not the one in your pocket.

For audio, use a helmet with removable ear pads and a drop-in speaker kit rather than earbuds: nothing in your ear canal, nothing to lose, and no pressure under the pad. For staying in touch across a mountain, two-way radios beat phones, because a phone battery dies in the cold and a lift line has no signal. Whatever you use, keep one ear on the mountain - you need to hear people behind you.

Start with the ear pads, because that is what decides it

Almost every snow helmet has removable ear pads. They come out for warm spring days and, more usefully, they come out so that a drop-in speaker can go in their place. The ear pads are not part of the certified impact structure, which is the shell and the energy-absorbing liner, so removing or replacing them does not affect what the helmet is certified to do.

That is the whole mechanism. A drop-in kit is a pair of thin speakers on a wire, or a wireless pair, that sit inside the ear pad pocket. Nothing goes in your ear canal, there is nothing to lose on a chairlift, and there is no hard object pressing between your head and the liner. Check that your helmet publishes removable ear pads before buying a kit; a helmet with fixed pads has no home for one.

Volume is a safety question, not a preference

Skiing is one of very few activities where the hazard is mostly behind you. The rules of the slope put the responsibility on the uphill skier to avoid the one below, which means the person below - you - is relying on being seen. Hearing is the backup for that, and it is the one you lose first.

What you want to hear: someone calling, the scrape of an edge approaching fast, a lift attendant, a child. Music at a level where those are audible is a lot quieter than most people set it, and the test is simple: if you cannot hear your own skis on the snow, it is too loud.

Two-way radios, and why they beat phones

A family spread across a mountain has a coordination problem, and the phone is a bad tool for it for four specific reasons.

The last row is the one that matters for families. A seven-year-old cannot reliably operate a phone in gloves and can absolutely press one large button and say where they are. Give the child a radio and keep the phone yourself.

Three practical notes on radios

  • Agree a channel before you leave the car. Standing at a lift scrolling through channels while a child is somewhere else is the failure mode.
  • Advertised range is line of sight over flat ground. A mountain is neither, and a ridge between two people blocks a radio entirely. Plan for a meeting point rather than assuming coverage.

The low-tech plan that works better than either

Before any of this, agree a plan that does not depend on electronics. Pick a fixed meeting point at the base and a time. Agree that anyone who gets separated goes there and waits rather than searching. Write a phone number on a card in each child’s pocket, or on the inside of a helmet.

Every ski school and patrol operates on the assumption that people get separated, and every one of them will tell you the same thing: the family that agreed a meeting point is reunited in twenty minutes and the family that did not spends the afternoon on it. Radios and phones make that plan more comfortable. They do not replace it.

Which helmets take a drop-in kit

Look for removable ear pads on the published specification. Questions people actually ask

Can you put headphones under a ski helmet?

Earbuds are a poor idea: a hard object between your ear and the liner is a pressure point on a long day and a concentrated load in a fall, and it blocks the ear completely. Use a drop-in speaker kit in the removable ear pad pocket instead, which sits flat and leaves your ear canal open.

Does removing helmet ear pads affect safety?

No. The certified impact structure is the shell and the energy-absorbing liner; ear pads are warmth and comfort. Removing them, or replacing them with a speaker drop-in, does not change what the helmet is certified to do. It does change how much you can hear.

How loud is too loud when skiing?

If you cannot hear your own skis on the snow, it is too loud. The hazard when skiing is mostly behind you, and hearing is the backup for being seen. Anyone still learning should ski with no audio at all.

Are two-way radios better than phones for skiing?

For a family, generally yes. Radios use far less power so they survive the cold, they work line of sight where cell coverage often does not, they have one large button that works in gloves, and everyone on the channel hears the same message. Keep the phone as the backup.

What range do ski radios actually get?

Far less than the advertised figure, because published ranges assume line of sight over flat ground and a mountain is neither. A ridge between two people blocks a radio entirely. Agree a fixed meeting point and a time as the plan, and treat the radio as a convenience on top of it.
