First: you may not need one
A boot dryer is a convenience, not a requirement, and this page is going to say so before it sells you anything. Pull the liners out of the shells, open every buckle, and stand both parts somewhere with moving air at room temperature, and they will be dry by morning for nothing. The full no-machine technique is here, and for a household that skis five days a year it is genuinely enough.
Three situations change that answer. If you ski consecutive days, overnight air drying is often not finished by 8am and you start day two in a damp liner. If you are in a rented condo with no warm dry room, there may be nowhere for the air to move. And if there are four of you, four sets of boots and gloves is more wet gear than any hallway absorbs. Those three cases are what the machines below are for.
How these were ranked
We have not run any of these machines. What we did was read what each maker publishes on its own product page: the drying time, the number of ports and what they take, the wattage, the temperature, whether there is a timer, and the warranty term. Every figure below is cited on the pick, and the arithmetic behind each score is published so you can re-run it with your own weightings.
One convention is worth flagging because it is unusually harsh here. This site amortizes accessories over three seasons at five days each, so a dryer’s cost-per-day figure is computed over 15 days. A machine with a published 25-year warranty will obviously outlive that by a factor of eight. We have not bent the convention for this category, because a convention you bend when it flatters a product is not a convention. Read the cost column as a strict floor rather than a forecast.
Forced air against convection, in one table
Almost every buying decision here collapses into this one distinction. Forced air blows gently warmed air through the boot; convection lets warmed air rise through it. The first is fast and audible, the second is slow and silent.

Count the ports before you compare the prices
The single most common regret in this category is buying a two-port machine for a four-person household. A pair of ski boots is two ports. A pair of gloves is two more. So a two-port dryer handles one person’s boots per cycle, and a family of four with wet gloves is looking at six cycles a night on a machine that publishes an eight-hour cycle.
Two of the picks below take four items at once. The tall-boot detail nobody mentions
A ski boot is not a shoe. The published limit on the standard Force Dry is items up to 10 inches, which covers most ski boots but not tall winter or wader-style boots. The DX ships with extension tubes published to 16 inches, and PEET publishes a separate 12-inch extension for boots over 11 inches. If your household has tall boots in the mix, check that number before the price.
The warranty spread is the widest we have seen in any category
Across the whole of this site, no category has a warranty range like this one. DryGuy publishes 1 year on the Force Dry, the Force Dry DX and the Dry Rack. DryGuy publishes no term at all on the Simple Dry. PEET publishes 25 years.
A 25-year term on a $59.99 device is a strong statement about what the maker thinks will fail, and it fits the engineering: with no fan there is nothing in a PEET to wear out. If you expect to own one dryer for the rest of your skiing life and you do not need same-evening turnaround, that number is the argument. If you need boots dry by dinner, the one-year term on a forced-air machine is the price of the speed.
What running one actually costs
Less than people assume, which is why the published wattages are worth quoting. PEET publishes 36 watts and describes it as less electricity than a low-wattage light bulb. The Dry Rack publishes 7.5 watts per boot, so all four ports together draw about as much as a phone charger under load. Running either overnight for a whole ski season is small change; the purchase price is the only real cost in this category.

Skip this one. It is the cheapest published route out of a radiator and it works, but one pair per night is the wrong shape for the households that buy boot dryers. If you ski alone it is the right answer; if there are four of you in a condo it turns drying into a rota.

Questions people actually ask
How long does a boot dryer take to dry ski boots?
It depends entirely on the type. Forced-air units publish a 1 to 2 hour dry time. Convection and radiant units either publish 8 hours or publish no time at all and tell you to leave gear on overnight. Neither figure changes much with how wet the boot is; a soaked liner simply pushes you toward the long end.
Are boot dryers safe to leave on overnight?
The published designs are built for it: PEET publishes 36 watts of fan-free convection and DryGuy publishes 7.5 watts per boot on the Dry Rack. Forced-air units publish a 3-hour timer or auto shut-off, so they are designed to stop rather than run all night. Follow the maker instructions on the unit you own.
Can I just use a radiator instead?
No. Direct heat hardens and shrinks boot liners and can separate glued construction. The dryers here deliberately run low, at a published 105F or a published 36 watts, and that restraint is the entire product. Room-temperature moving air is the free version and it is safe.
Do boot dryers stop boots smelling?
They address the cause, which is a liner that stays damp. Makers describe drying as preventing bacterial and fungal growth, and a dry liner does not develop the smell in the first place. A liner that already smells needs washing as well as drying.
How many ports do I need?
Count two per pair. One person’s boots and gloves is four ports, so a two-port machine means two cycles for one skier. A family of four wants a four-port unit and a plan, or a forced-air machine fast enough to run several cycles in an evening.
