How to dry ski gear overnight, in a rental condo, for nothing

Wet boots on day two are the most avoidable bad day in skiing. Here is the routine, in the order it has to happen, and the four things that quietly ruin gear.

Pull the liners out of the boot shells, open every buckle and strap, turn gloves inside out at the cuff, and hang everything where air moves at room temperature. Never on a radiator, a heater or a hot air vent: direct heat hardens liners, shrinks leather and separates glued seams. Done at 6pm, everything is dry by morning. A dryer only buys you speed and unattended operation.

Why day two is always worse than day one

Almost nobody has a bad first day because of wet gear. They have a bad second day. The liner that felt fine at 4pm on Monday has been sitting inside a closed plastic shell for fifteen hours, and at 8am on Tuesday it is colder and damper than the outside air. Feet in a damp liner get cold within an hour and stay cold, and cold feet end more family ski days than weather does.

The fix is not equipment. It is twenty minutes on the first evening, done in the right order, and then repeated. Everything below assumes a normal rented condo or hotel room with no drying room and nowhere obvious to put anything.

The evening routine, in order

  1. Boots first, because they take longest. Undo every buckle and the power strap completely, then pull the liner out of the shell. Most modern boots let the liner come out with a firm pull on the tongue and heel; if it resists, open the buckles wider rather than fighting it. Stand the liner and the shell separately, both open.
  2. Gloves inside out at the cuff. Do not turn the whole glove inside out, which stresses the seams and can tear the waterproof insert. Just roll the cuff back so the wettest part, the inside of the wrist, is exposed to the air.
  3. Socks and base layers go in the wash or on a hanger. Wet merino left in a heap for three days is how a trip develops a smell. Washing merino correctly is on its own page.
  4. Goggles face up, never in the bag. Standing water inside a goggle needs to evaporate, and the soft bag they came in traps it. Shake them out, never wipe the inside lens, and leave them lens-up on a surface. The full goggle care page explains why.
  5. Jacket and pants unzipped and hung, not folded. Every pit zip and thigh vent open, hood out. A hanger on a door frame beats a chair back every time because air can reach both faces.
  6. Helmet upside down with the pads exposed. The comfort liner holds sweat, and a helmet stored dome-up dries last where it matters most.

The only variable that matters is moving air

Drying is not about heat. It is about air carrying water away, and air that is not moving becomes saturated in the first inch around the wet object and then does nothing. This is why a closed bathroom with wet gear in it is the worst room in the condo and a hallway with a door open at each end is the best.

  • Spread things out. Two boots touching each other dry at half the speed of two boots a hand-span apart.
  • Get gear off the floor if the floor is cold. A chair, a table or a windowsill above a radiator, not on it.
  • A cheap fan on low beats any amount of heat. If a condo has a desk fan, point it at the boots and go to dinner.
  • Crack a window if it is dry outside. Cold dry mountain air holds more water than warm wet indoor air, which is counterintuitive and true.

The four things that destroy gear

These come up constantly and every one of them is a real, permanent kind of damage rather than a myth:

  • A radiator, a wood stove or a hot air vent. Ski boot liners are thermoformable foam. Direct heat hardens and shrinks them and the fit you paid for never comes back. It also softens glue on layered construction.
  • A hairdryer inside a boot. Same problem, concentrated, plus it melts liner fabric.
  • A tumble dryer for outerwear or gloves. Heat and mechanical action wreck waterproof membranes and leather palms. Gloves in particular shrink hard and never recover.
  • Leaving everything in the bag overnight. A closed bag is a humid box. This is how liners smell permanently and how goggle foam grows mold.

The gear choice that halves the problem

What you put on your feet decides how wet the liner gets in the first place. Cotton socks hold water against the skin and pass it into the liner all day; merino wool moves it out and keeps insulating when damp. Two pairs of good over-the-calf merino socks, worn one per day and washed in the sink, is a smaller and more effective purchase than any drying device. The same logic applies to gloves. A glove with a removable liner dries overnight; a sealed insulated glove does not, and after a soaking day it may still be damp at breakfast. If you ski consecutive days, that difference matters more than a waterproof rating. Gloves against mittens is a related decision.

Does newspaper in the boot work?

A little, and less than the internet claims. Paper absorbs some water by contact and then sits there saturated, so it helps for the first hour and hurts after that unless you change it. Pulling the liner out and letting air at it is strictly better and takes less effort. If you do use paper, take it out before bed rather than leaving it in overnight.

When a machine is genuinely worth it

Three situations, and only three. Consecutive ski days where overnight is not enough time. A condo with no warm dry space and no airflow. Or a household of four whose wet gear simply exceeds the surfaces available. In any of those, a boot dryer earns its price: forced-air units publish a 1 to 2 hour dry time and convection units publish overnight, and the ranking of the five we compared turns almost entirely on port count and warranty term.

If none of those three apply, the routine on this page is the whole answer and it costs nothing. Spend the money on socks.

How do you dry ski boots overnight without a dryer?

Open every buckle, pull the liners out of the shells, and stand liners and shells separately somewhere with moving air at room temperature. Spread them apart rather than side by side. Done in the early evening, they are dry by morning.

Can you dry ski gloves on a radiator?

No. Direct heat shrinks and hardens leather palms and can damage the waterproof insert. Roll the cuffs back so the inside of the wrist is exposed and hang them where air moves. If the glove has a removable liner, take it out.

Why do my ski boots smell?

Because the liner stays damp between days, which is what bacteria need. Drying the liner outside the shell every evening prevents it. A liner that already smells needs washing as well as drying; check the maker instructions before putting one in a machine.

Is it better to dry gear in a warm room or a cold one?

Neither, on its own: what matters is air movement. A cold hallway with a through-draft beats a warm sealed bathroom. If the room is warm and the air is still, put a fan on low and it will outperform any amount of extra heat.

Should I take the liners out of my ski boots every night?

On a multi-day trip, yes. It is the single highest-value five minutes in this whole routine, because the liner is where the water is and the shell is what stops it escaping. On a single day trip you can get away with just opening the buckles.
